Abstract : Domestic violence a social evil against women and can be defined as “a pattern of behaviour in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner”. It is a matter of serious public health concerns at all the places around the globe. This problem cannot be resolved without mutual effort of “law enforcement, social welfare and health care services”. The problem resolution gained significance in India after domestic violence act in 2005. Main objective of the paper is to assess the occurrence of domestic violence against women, and to study the effects and causes of domestic violence in Indian society. The study also aims at finding out the socio-demographic factors in females suffering from domestic violence. Using the Research Methodology: A population based cross sectional study was carried out in the rural areas of Jaipur district for 4 months. The total population covered under this study was around 35 Km. Samples were selected using Simple random sampling method. The respondents selected for the study were interviewed using a predesigned structured questionnaire. Different frequency tables and graphs were used for the analysis of the study and Finding Indian rural women are still facing a very high percentage of domestic violence against them and hence the problem needs urgent and serious resolution which should be done by collaborative endeavours of society, people and government. Rural women are required to be empowered to stand against this social evil. Generating awareness, changing mind-set of people and society with the help of education and law enforcement can only brought real change in these cases.
